 Kumamoto Shachihoko statue

New ornaments for the Kumamoto Castle towers, the "shachihoko" damaged by the April earthquake of the last year, were exhibited a few days ago at a facility near the Castle.

Unfortunately, the earthquake that struck the city of Kumamoto left its mark on the important and famous castle, four sculptures of shachihoko, created in 2008 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the foundation of the castle, suffered major damage due to their fall from the main and secondary towers.

The craftsman Fujimoto Onigawara, who made the previous sculptures and who is in Uki, Kumamoto Prefecture, has been commissioned for these new Shachihoko. He has worked for more than 6 months to produce two pairs of new ornaments of the same size and forms of the precedents.

Shachihoko's sculptures for the main tower are 119 centimeters tall and weigh 100 kilograms each, while the torque for the smaller tower is 86 centimeters tall and weighs 70 kilograms.

The restoration skills of Japanese craftsmen are incredible and denote all the art and passion that these "masters" place in their work.
